Ding Ding

A dignified old Dobermann who moved into Gimlet Ridge one nap at a time, and turned out to be a queen named Bonnie all along.

Ding Ding started turning up at Gimlet Ridge in the summer of 2026, a few days after Sunny passed. She belonged to a neighbor, had lived outdoors most of her life, and was already 14. Over the next two months she moved in one step at a time: the yard, the doorstep, the ottoman, the couch. In September 2026 it became official. She lives here now.

How it started

Sunny's Spot

A few days after Sunny passed in July 2026, a quiet old Dobermann started tagging along with Heidi and then staying behind, lying outside the front door in the exact spot Sunny used to claim. Nobody knew why she picked that spot. We let her keep it as long as she liked. We called her Duchess, then gave her a Chinese nickname, Ding Ding, and only later learned her real name was Bonnie.

Coming Inside

She'd been an outdoor dog most of her life, and the house made her nervous. On a hot day in late July we coaxed her in, and she made it two steps past the door before stopping. Less than two weeks later she was sleeping on the living room ottoman two nights running and had taken over Hiker's office chair. Once she'd had a taste of the soft life, the choice was obvious.

The Queen Who Kept Coming Back

Her family picked her up more than once, and more than once she was waiting at our door the next morning, heading straight back to the ottoman the moment it opened. On walks she'd head toward her own house only as long as Hiker did, and turn around the moment we did. When we sent her neighbor a photo of her asleep on the ottoman, he joked that no wonder she kept coming back, she was being treated like a queen.

Fourteen and Still Game

She's 14, which is close to 100 in human years, and one of her legs flares up from time to time. On those days she still joins the morning walk, slow but not about to miss it, and hops around on three legs for the rest of the day. On her good days she is more active than Hiker, who is about half her age.

Settling In

In September 2026 the families made it official with a formal agreement: she isn't going home again. She's already picked up the house rules. She hears a plastic bag open and hops off the ottoman to check for food, she's learned the dinner-table stare from Hiker, and in the evenings she curls up on the couch with Hiker in the spot Sunny used to share with her. At night she snores, same as Hiker.
